Rebrand Without the Hassle of Forming a New Company
DBA stands for “doing business as”. It can also be referred to as a “trade name” or “fictitious name” for a company, partnership or sole proprietorship. It’s like a pen name or a nickname, for companies already doing business in a state. It’s a way to rebrand, reach targeted customers, or conduct business in states where your primary name may not be available (this option would require a new company in the target state before a DBA can be applied for).
How Do I File One?
The DBA process varies widely from state to state, and many counties also have their own rules in place for this process. For example: in Hawaii, the process can be as simple as filing a single form and paying a fee; but in Illinois, the charges will vary depending on the year you file. Many counties will also require you to publish your intent to file in a local newspaper and provide proof of publication. In Kansas, there is no process in place to file a DBA. Some states require renewals, while in others, the DBA does not expire. The best way to begin the process is with thorough, up-to-date research on your state and county’s particular requirements: however, many small business owners simply do not have the time to conduct this research.
At L4SB, we do the research so you don’t have to. Whatever state you’re doing business in, we will make the process as streamlined as possible, and ensure that no steps are omitted.
When Do I Need a DBA?
A DBA allows you to expand your products or services while working under a different name. For example, if you own a bakery called The Amazing Biscuit Company, LLC, but you want to open a small kiosk that only sells cupcakes, a kiosk with the word “Biscuit” in its name may confuse your potential customers. That cupcake kiosk might perform better with a name like Cupcakes on the Go. In this case, a DBA may be the solution.
